QUEBEC CITY: Putting the Gardens back in "Des Jardins"
The land upon which the cathedral stands is unique in the old city. It is surrounded by buildings, and for many years it has been used as a parking lot and a summer artisans market.
Yet from the 1600s through to the 1800s, this space was alive with gardens, trees and fruits and livestock, etc.
The "Putting the Gardens back in Des Jardins" project is doing just that. The Cathedral Close is coming back to life, one community volunteer, one raised bed, one sunflower, one picnic table at a time.
